Alana Spencer

Winner of the BBC’s The Apprentice 2016, talks about her fast growing rise to business success and the growth of her company “Ridiculously Rich by Alana”, in partnership with one of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurial businessman Lord Alan Sugar.

Since a young age, Alana Spencer has had a penchant for business. The Welsh native left school at seventeen to focus on her passion – baking. Seven years later, her unique brand of cakes convinced Lord Alan Sugar to name her as his business partner and invest £250,000 into her company ‘Ridiculously Rich by Alana’.

Alana grew up in Aberystwyth, a small seaside town in the Welsh county of Ceredigion. She first got a taste for business when she began to make cards and sell them to her classmates in school. After this forage into moneymaking, Alana switched her attention to sweet treats while still a pupil at Ysgol Aberaeron. While there, she became a self-taught chocolatier and managed to sell her products to family and friends.

After leaving school, Alana applied to go on the junior version of ‘The Apprentice’ however, despite not making it to the show this set back didn’t stop her and the company ‘Narnas’ continued to grow. She successfully went on to win a grant from Local Investment Funding (LIF), which allowed her to build her own kitchen at her parent’s home and after making the transition from chocolates to cakes and brownies, began supplying specialist cakes to food festivals and country shows.

With Narnas expanding, Alana once again applied to ‘The Apprentice’ in 2016, successfully making it into the final 18. During the twelve weeks, Alana grew in confidence and was praised for her business acumen. She successfully persuaded Lord Sugar to make her the first Welsh winner of the Apprentice and in the process transitioning her brand into ‘Ridiculously Rich by Alana’.
