Frank won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 after his retirement from boxing that year. In 2003 Frank was diagnosed as having Bipolar disorder. His well-documented illness put Frank in the public eye and he used this media attention to help try and eliminate the stigma attached to mental health, raise awareness and to help raise the standards of care given to those suffering with mental health issues.
‘Ever since I retired one thing has stood between me and being the man I want to be. My mind. Depression comes from nowhere. From the shadows. How can you defend yourself from a punch you can’t see?’ ‘Let Me Be Frank’ publishes 2017.
